Dear Deckerville Community Schools Family and Community,
This update addresses continued concerns over student safety, as well as providing important information in regard to ongoing criminal activity in our community and the District’s disposition in regard to Deckerville students who may have been involved in these activities.
In recent days and weeks there have been several incidents of illegal activity in Deckerville and its surroundings. Some of these activities have involved current and former students either directly or indirectly. None of these incidents have occurred on District property. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate.
Unfortunately, things that occur outside of District facilities can often have an adverse effect during the school day, as was the case on Monday, April 15th, when our facility was placed on lockdown. This was in response to an altercation that took place between two students in the high school. Law enforcement was notified and responded immediately. The district remained on lockdown until searches were conducted and until both parties were confirmed to be secure. At no point in time was a direct threat made to students or staff, and there was no “physical” altercation.
In light of all of this, during the school day, I am asking our staff to remain on a heightened state of alert for the remainder of the week. Outdoor recess is cancelled until Monday and the pre-school field trip will now be transported by bus, rather than on foot as originally planned. After school activities and sporting events are not being cancelled, however, if a parent or guardian chooses to withhold their student from a practice or event this week, there will be no athletic penalty.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Hugan
Superintendent
Deckerville Community Schools
