The number of positive COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Michigan have recently trended upward. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), hospitals, and local health officials are asking all residents to take steps to prevent a surge in cases that could overwhelm the hospital system. Current orders from the MDHHS now require students in K-5 classrooms to wear masks while in class. Teachers are encouraged to allow for frequent mask breaks for students of all grade levels. The complete MDHHS order can be found at https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/0,9753,7-406-98178_98455-541962--,00.html.

October 15, 2020 Parent-Teacher Conferences Dear Parents, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on October 15, 2020. Teachers will be available to speak with you from 12:30 P.M. until 3:30 P.M. and from 4:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. Due to the unprecedented COVID situation, we are setting forth some guidelines in order to keep both you and the staff safe. First, masks will be required inside the building at all times, and masks must be worn properly, covering both the mouth and nose. Next, we ask that no more than two people attend the conference. Disinfecting wipes will be available in each classroom and we ask that you take one and wipe down your seating area before the conference begins. Some of the teachers may have a plexiglass divider on the table during the conference. If you do not feel comfortable having a face to face conference, please contact your student’s teacher to set up a phone conference or a virtual meeting. The following teachers have decided to hold conferences virtually or by phone: Mr. Brabant, Mrs. Pavlovics, Ms. Roggenbuck, and Mrs. Wolschleger. Please contact the teacher directly to schedule a virtual conference. We thank you for your understanding during these difficult times. Sincerely, Josh Stern Deckerville Jr./Sr. High School Principal

On Friday, September 25th, Governor Whitmer issued Executive Order 2020-183, which required all students in grades K-5 to wear a face mask in classrooms, beginning on Monday, October 5th. Prior executive orders had recommended, but not required, a face mask in grades K-5. On Friday, October 2nd, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that Governor Whitmer did not have the authority to issue COVID-19 Executive Orders after April 30th, 2020, under the Emergency Management Act. The Court also ruled that the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act, which is the basis for issuing Executive Orders, is unconstitutional. In regards to this decision, Deckerville Community Schools will follow the recommendation of our law firm, which, until further clarity is received, is to continue to comply with our board approved COVID-19 Preparedness and Response plan. This is exactly how we started the school year, and we have been quite successful thus far in implementing this plan. In regard to the wearing of masks, K-5 students in self-contained classrooms will not be required to wear masks while in class.
